Series: The Lady Janies #2
Format: ARC
You may think you know the story. After a miserable childhood, penniless orphan Jane Eyre embarks on a new life as a governess at Thornfield Hall. There, she meets one dark, brooding Mr. Rochester. Despite their significant age gap (!) and his uneven temper (!!), they fall in love—and, Reader, she marries him. (!!!)
Or does she?
Prepare for an adventure of Gothic proportions, in which all is not as it seems, a certain gentleman is hiding more than skeletons in his closets, and one orphan Jane Eyre, aspiring author Charlotte Brontë, and supernatural investigator Alexander Blackwood are about to be drawn together on the most epic ghost hunt this side of Wuthering Heights.
I adored MY LADY JANE so I was so psyched to have traded for this ARC of MY PLAIN JANE! This novel follows seer of ghosts Jane Eyre, author Charlotte Brontë, and ghost investigator Alexander Blackwood. Written in three alternating POVs, MY PLAIN JANE is a whirlwind adventure filled with humor, ghosts, and romance.
Jane Eyre is sent to Thornfield Hall where she falls in love with Mr. Rochester and along the way, Alexander and Charlotte are attempting to make Jane join the Society for the Relocation of Wayward Spirits, as she has the power to see and command ghosts. Twists and turns ensue – this novel is action-packed to the rim.
I enjoyed reading this novel in various POVs as I did with the previous novel, and I think these authors work together extremely well. There are also so many different aspects of history that these authors played on, and reading about them were so cute – they are basically little Easter eggs and it’s so fun to see everything fit together. My only reservation is that I didn’t feel as if this novel was as humorous as MY LADY JANE. I remember laughing out loud when I read the previous novel, but I just didn’t really get that out of the sequel. It was humorous, but don’t expect to be cracking up.
Overall, I enjoyed MY PLAIN JANE! It’s so interesting to see these authors incorporate ghosts and sassiness and mix historical fiction with paranormal and romance – this novel has basically everything. If you loved MY LADY JANE, I’m sure you’ll like this one as well.
Alice is an 19 year old college student who loves the oxford comma, television shows, and the company of dogs. She finds writing in the third person odd yet enjoyable. You can find her scrolling through Twitter, Instagram, and forever organizing her shelves on Goodreads.
I was a little underwhelmed by the My Lady Jane (think the hype monster killed that for me), but I’ve been eager for the follow-up novels because I love the whole idea of them. I think I’m going to try this as an audiobook if I can in the hopes that the humour will be more apparent to me (because it wasn’t in the first book!).

I loved them both! I did love book 1 a little more, but I adore the humor the authors throw in to the stories!
