I started reading more backlist books since I’m taking a bit of a break from ARCs. Today, I’ll be reviewing two very hyped books: WALK ON EARTH A STRANGER by Rae Carson and WE WERE LIARS by E. Lockhart.
Walk on Earth a Stranger by Rae Carson
Series: The Gold Seer Trilogy #1
Publication: September 22nd 2015 by Greenwillow
This book is a lot slower than I had imagined, but it redeems itself with its feminist flair and slight supernatural aspect. I don’t read many Westerns/historical fiction, but the setting was very imaginative and pretty accurate of the time period. I love the girl-dresses-as-boy trope, so if you’re a fan of that, you might love this one! There’s a lack of romance to this first of a new series, but there’s a hint of a growing one, which I’m excited for.
Do I recommend? Yes! Although this book isn’t in my usual preferred genre, I really enjoyed this! Be wary, though, if you’re not into slower Westerns and a lack of romance.
We Were Liars by E. Lockhart
Series: n/a
Publication:May 13th 2014 by Delacorte Press
I didn’t really know what to expect in this novel but I knew that many people enjoyed this book. The plot flowed rather too slow for my taste, but I enjoyed the amount of detail that the author included in terms of Cadence’s evolution since her accident. The writing style had some variety which I liked, such as lists and different formats, reminiscent of SHATTER ME. I was definitely expected a lot in terms of the ending but unfortunately, I wasn’t that impressed. It was a surprise, yes, but I suppose I didn’t have that enough emotional attachment to the characters for the ending to really impact me.
Do I recommend? Yes! This book has lots of redeeming qualities, but I wasn’t too impressed.
Love these mini reviews!

I read ‘We Were Liars’ a long time ago, but I remember that I hated it, I didn’t like the MC, the whole story was just.. bleh. Not for me.

Ah, yeah, I totally understand why you didn’t really like it. It definitely was slow and boring but …. I guess there were a few redeemable parts.

Oh Walk On Earth A Stranger sounds interesting! Sadly I’ve been spoiled for We Were Liars so I’m not really interested in it anymore 😦 Great reviews!

Great mini reviews! Unfortunately I don’t think i’ll be reading either of these ones. Walk on Earth a Stranger has a setting I’d be interested in and the feminist in me wants to give it a go but the slow pacing and lack of romance just don’t cut it for me. We Were Liars did sound promising from the synopsis but I’ve read too many negative reviews that now it’s just put me off the book altogether.

Thank you! I totally agree, it was a pretty slow read for me, slower than I’m used to. Ah, that’s understandable!

Ugghh I’m stuck between wanting to read Walk on Earth a Stranger and not wanting to because of the pacing which can be a deal breaker for me! The plot , characters and setting sound fantastic but yeah I hate slow books they just get too boring! We Were Liars did sound great but like others have mentioned it doesn’t deliver so I’ll skip that one.

That’s true. I’m not usually a fan of slower books so I didn’t like WOEAS TOO much. WWL was okay but not great.

Walk on Earth has a gorgeous cover, and it sounds good. But it is so outside of my norm, it scares me a bit. We Were Liars is right in my norm, but I worry about reading it because of the massive hype monster. Seems like i may need to give them both a chance, huh?

I read We Were Liars last year and I remember really liking it but at the same time, I remember thinking the ending was a bit “meh”. It was predictable for sure. And I wasn’t a fan of the love interest haha

I still need to read We Were Liars! I feel like it is a young adult “classic.” Everyone has seemed to read it except for me! And I enjoyed Walk on Earth a Stranger. I will be reading the second book when it comes out! I feel like the pace is definitely going to pick up!
