– 10 Book-to-Movies I Still Have to Watch

One concept: Books. What a wonderful thing.

Another concept: Movies. Also an awesome thing.

Put them together, and I’m utterly in love. I personally love book-to-movie adaptations, although I know many people don’t.

Despite that, here are 10 movies based on books that I still have to / want to watch.

Fun fact: I’ve only read 3 of the books on which these movies were based. Can you guess which ones?

1. The Giver (2014)

Jonas (Brenton Thwaites) lives in a seemingly idyllic world of conformity and contentment. When he begins to spend time with The Giver (Jeff Bridges), an old man who is the sole keeper of the community’s memories, Jonas discovers the dangerous truths of his community’s secret past. Armed with the power of knowledge, Jonas realizes that he must escape from their world to protect himself and those he loves — a challenge no one has ever completed successfully.

There’s a few actors I really like in this movie; I hope I get the chance to watch these soon!

2. The Fault in Our Stars (2014)

Hazel Grace Lancaster (Shailene Woodley), a 16-year-old cancer patient, meets and falls in love with Gus Waters (Ansel Elgort), a similarly afflicted teen from her cancer support group. Hazel feels that Gus really understands her. They both share the same acerbic wit and a love of books, especiallyGrace’s touchstone, “An Imperial Affliction” by Peter Van Houten. When Gus scores an invitation to meet the reclusive author, he and Hazel embark on the adventure of their brief lives.

 

Shailene and Ansel: the power actor couple. Oh, how I wish I could have the time to  watch this.

3. The Great Gatsby (2013)

Midwest native Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) arrives in 1922 New York in search of the American dream. Nick, a would-be writer, moves in next-door to millionaire Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio) and across the bay from his cousin Daisy (Carey Mulligan) and her philandering husband, Tom (Joel Edgerton). Thus, Nick becomes drawn into the captivating world of the wealthy and — as he bears witness to their illusions and deceits — pens a tale of impossible love, dreams, and tragedy.

Leonardo DiCaprio, one of my favorite actors and one of the main characters of my favorite movie (Titanic), is in this one. I actually own this movie, but haven’t had the chance to watch it yet.

4. If I Stay

Mia Hall (Chloë Grace Moretz), a talented young cellist, thought the most difficult decision she would ever have to make would be whether to pursue her musical dreams at prestigious Juilliard or follow her heart to be with the love of her life, Adam (Jamie Blackley), a rock singer/guitarist. However, a car wreck changes everything in an instant, and now Mia’s life hangs in the balance. Suspended between life and death, Mia faces a choice that will decide her future.

 

 

Chloë Grace Moretz is so talented, and she’s going to be starring in the adaptation of one of my favorite YA novels, THE FIFTH WAVE. I’m excited to be seeing her acting in this one.

5. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 (2014)

Following her rescue from the devastating Quarter Quell, Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) awakes in the complex beneath the supposedly destroyed District 13. Her home, District 12, has been reduced to rubble, and Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) is now the brainwashed captive of President Snow (Donald Sutherland). At the same time, Katniss also learns about a secret rebellion spreading throughout all of Panem — a rebellion that will place her at the center of a plot to turn the tables on Snow.

I was such a huge fan of THG a few years ago, but I just haven’t had the will to continue reading the series and watching the movies.

6. Paper Towns

Young and shy Quentin (Nat Wolff) is in for the night of his life when Margo (Cara Delevingne), the most popular student in high school, recruits him to help her play mischievous pranks on the friends who betrayed her. The next day, however, the mysterious Margo is nowhere to be found. With help from a few buddies and some cryptic clues that she left behind, Quentin embarks on an obsessive mission to find the girl who stole his heart and made him feel truly alive.

I’ve only read one of John Green’s novels, Looking for Alaska, and I really enjoyed it, so I’m quite interested to see this adaptation.

7. The Devil Wears Prada

Andy (Anne Hathaway) is a recent college graduate with big dreams. Upon landing a job at prestigious Runway magazine, she finds herself the assistant to diabolical editor Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep). Andy questions her ability to survive her grim tour as Miranda’s whipping girl without getting scorched.

 

8. Fight Club

A depressed man (Edward Norton) suffering from insomnia meets a strange soap salesman named Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt) and soon finds himself living in his squalid house after his perfect apartment is destroyed. The two bored men form an underground club with strict rules and fight other men who are fed up with their mundane lives. Their perfect partnership frays when Marla (Helena Bonham Carter), a fellow support group crasher, attracts Tyler’s attention.

One of the classics I still have not watched! I’m slightly embarrassed.

9. Insurgent

Now on the run from Jeanine (Kate Winslet) and the rest of the power-hungry Erudites, Tris (Shailene Woodley) and Four (Theo James) search for allies and answers in the ruins of Chicago. They must find out what Tris’ family sacrificed their lives to protect and why the Erudites will do anything to stop them. Side by side, Tris and Four face one seemingly insurmountable challenge after another, as they unravel the secrets of the past and — ultimately — the future of their world.

The promo poster looks so good. Like THG, I haven’t finished the series, but I really enjoyed the first one and the movie!

10. The Martian

When astronauts blast off from the planet Mars, they leave behind Mark Watney (Matt Damon), presumed dead after a fierce storm. With only a meager amount of supplies, the stranded visitor must utilize his wits and spirit to find a way to survive on the hostile planet. Meanwhile, back on Earth, members of NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring him home, while his crew mates hatch their own plan for a daring rescue mission.

Unfortunately, I still haven’t read the book or seen the movie! I want to read this so badly.
